"House built for Giants" near the Great Sandhills in Saskatchewan. I'm Celebrating Halloween week with some of my favorite spooky photos and their stories on my facebook page, so figured i'd post some of those shots here. Just a little over 2 years ago on October 19, I went to vote for the Canadian Federal election. A local fellow who was working the ballot stations called me over and to talk about some old homesteads. He told me the story of this house, built for a family of giants. He and his wife drew me a map to show me how to get here. The family who lived here were all over 7′ tall, the house had over-sized ceilings and doorways to accommodate them. The photo was picked up by CBC Saskatchewan and was shared a lot. A few days later I got an email from someone now living in B.C, who thought he might be related to the family who lived there. I looked through the history book of the area, and found the family! There was no mention of the size of the family, but the fathers nickname was... "Cougar House" SW Saskatchewan. I'm Celebrating Halloween week with some of my favorite spooky photos and their stories on my facebook page, so figured i'd post some of those shots here. Cypress Hills has the highest known density of cougars anywhere in the world. Males ranges overlap with eachother, and it seems like the cougars are starting to spread from the hills. They have been seen in towns and cities in South West Saskatchewan and South East Alberta. A few years ago a conservation officer told me to be careful when out photographing old homesteads, as cougars have been known to use the basements and porches for dens. A few years ago I photographed this vacant homestead. This was the shot i wanted, but i thougth i better go around to the left side incase there was a good shot to be had from that direction. That is when i noticed a very large hole in the dirt leading by the foundation of this house. I walked up to it and could see that a large animal had been using it recently. I tried looking in to see if i could catch a glimpse of what it was. That was when I remembered the advice about cougars... and decided this shot was going to be good enough for the day and walked back to the truck. "Birds Eye View" SW Saskatchewan. I really enjoy photography in the Fall when the grass is dead and a mix of warm rustic colors appears. I bought a drone in the Summer of 2016, and am currently addicted to the drone. I find I really have to think about my compositions when using it, which is always good practice. 3D Composition really. "Prevailing Winds" SW Saskatchewan. A winter shot from my DJI Phantom 4. One thing I like about drone photography is being able to see features of the landscape I would not normally be able to. "Bow Lake Alberta" Is number 10 on my #Fav12of2017 list. This year is a year I will never be able to repeat. In 130 days I drove 35,000 kms for photography. I dipped my feet in the Gulf of Mexico at Corpus Christi, the Atlantic in PEI and Nova Scotia, and the Pacific at Tofino BC. I saw the total eclipse in Idaho. I saw mountain ranges in Colorado, Wyoming, Montana and toured Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons. 9 provinces and 15 states. The prettiest and most amazing scenery in North America? The Alberta Rockies on my very last day of travel. It was not the first time I'd been there, but I was there with a new appreciation for scenery. My standards were pretty high, this year I really can say that I've seen it all. When I walked up to this shot and set my tripod down, I took 1 shot, and knew I had the shot I wanted. I was back in the truck 1 minute after getting out. “Little Mansion on the Prairies” is 8 on my list of #Fav12of2017 photos. This old place in Manitoba had been on my "list of places to photograph" for a very long time. It was one of the first stops my mother and I did on this year’s cross Canada driving tour. Built 121 years ago, it was owned by Politician / FreeMason who died here in 1926. As I was taking photos of the place, 2 guys from further East stopped to have a look at it. They told us they were on their way to do some work in Saskatchewan. They asked if we had ever seen "Old Geo's Museum" in Whitewood Saskatchewan. I hadn't, but it is now on that same list. When I posted the photo there were a lot of comments from people who knew the old place. Many had their own photos of it and some even had graduation and family photos taken here. I was contacted by some descendants of the original owner of the mansion who shared some old photos and interesting history with me. "Ryan's World" is 7 on my list of #Fav12of2017 photos. Since starting up an instagram and facebook account for my photos I keep hearing the same comparison from time to time. "That looks like an Andrew Wyeth painting" - or if they get more specific "Christina's World".. I usually don't see a direct resemblance. That was about to change. On this October day I was flying my drone past this yard. I'd back it up, fly higher, fly lower, go left, just looking for a composition that felt right. And then this came into view. "Now this reminds me of Christina's World" CLICK. I sent a link to the painting to my friend @tiarajackle of @rawfashionblog who is a model and enjoys all things vintage and retro. "Sunday Clears away the Rust of the Whole Week" is 4 6 on my list of #Fav12of2017 photos. I took this one in October when I checked on the old church to see if it had survived the strong winds the day of the massive grass fires. This is definitely one of my favorite places to photograph. I have been photographing the church for 12 years. In the last 6 years it has really started to deteriorate and collapse into itself. Strong winds always make me nervous for the old places that are starting to fall, and this is high on the list of locations i check on after a wind storm. Next year will be lucky 13, and also this churches' 99th year. "99 Years". I had mentioned that in the new year I would post the first photo I have taken of this old church (located in SW Saskatchewan), which is now on its 99th year. This shot is from June of 2005. I remember doing some work in the area and driving over this hill to see this old church standing in the rain. Even back then I rarely left the house without a camera. I was instantly captivated with it and have been back many times over the years to photograph it under a number of conditions. The church has started caving into itself in the last 5 years. It is pretty amazing to think about what it has seen in the last 99 years. Plough winds, large hail, many birds using it for shelter, some of the best sunset and sunrises in the world. I really hope It stands to see year 100. "Room with a View" Taken 2 years ago today. I've recently been looking through some old photos for a project I am working on, and saw that i have photos of this place going back to 2000. The building has deteriorated quite a bit in those 18 years. It is another one of those places that I check on after a strong wind. The open rooms point South West, and must catch a lot of the strong winds which often blow in that direction.It is also one of the only old homesteads I've seen built out of cinderblocks. “Little church on the Prairies” taken 2 years ago today. Kim @abandoned_prairies_photography and I spent the day out touring back roads and taking photos. She showed me this little church that I had never seen before. It is less than 40 miles from where I live and a Municipal Heritage Property. I’ve always really liked the architecture of Ukrainian Churches, built according to the centuries old traditions of their homeland. It is the only Ukrainian Catholic church I know of in the area. Built in 1944 during the war, materials were not easy to come by. It is a small church, less than 1000 square feet, the parish was founded and built by just 15 families in the area using donated funds and labour. By 1975 only 7 families were accounted for. “New Camera” shot in March of 2014. In late 2013 a Photographer / Stormchaser told me the best thing I could do for my photography was to upgrade cameras. So, very close to 4 years ago, I bought a Canon 6D. It was the best decision I ever made, it was worth the upgrade, that camera has given me a lot of memories. This is the first photo I ever took with it, an old homestead not far from town. Cameras are advancing in technology so quickly. 4 years and 120,000 photos later, I decided it was time for another upgrade. After a lot of research and help from some great photographers, I now have a new camera, and a new brand. I bought a Sony A7RIII – the camera was announced late last year and is pretty amazing. When I went to look at one in January, every camera store was sold out of them and I was told I needed to order one to be put on the waiting list. So that is what I did and it is now here. I also bought a new lens for the camera, a Sigma 14mm 1.8, a groundbreaking lens also released last year. I am very excited to get out to try this combination out. "The Preachers Car" taken 3 years ago. I'd seen pics of this old ghost town in SW Saskatchewan and put it 'on the list'. So in February 2015 after a trip to Moose Jaw, I took a bit of a detour to knock some of those places off of my list. While typing this up I remember that I had a really bad chest cold at the time, but decided to treck through the grass and the snow to take some shots anyways. I'm really glad I did, this is a great scene, and the only place I know of where you can get a photo of 2 old grain elevators, a church, and an old car a the same time. “Back for Seconds” shot 2 years ago. I took 3 different shots of this old place that I really like on leap year day 2016. After the massive grass fires in October I figured I better go check on it and make sure it was ok. I was sad to see it burnt to the ground. The fire stopped less than 100 feet away… this place was just on the very edge. I am now selling tickets to 5 photography workshops I am doing this year.
